Abstract

Introduction: Airway obstruction by a foreign body is an emergency triggered by several factors, such as edema, tongue drooping, epiglottis obstruction, damaged tissues or a foreign body. The Heimlich maneuver aims to reverse asphyxia, however, the literature does not have validated booklets for the prevention of these injuries. Objective: Create and validate an educational booklet on the Heimlich Maneuver for high school students. Method: Methodological study carried out in three phases: carrying out bibliographical research on the subject, development of the educational booklet and validation and evaluation of the material by judges. For the validation process, the Likert scale was used. The calculation for legitimacy had the application of the Content Validity Index, defined as a fundamental proposal in the process of developing new measures. Results: The booklet achieved an overall validation index of 0.94, considering the acceptable agreement value. Conclusion: The educational material was considered an important tool for the prevention of injuries related to airway obstruction due to choking, through teaching the Heimlich maneuver to high school students.
