Abstract

This study sought to understand the medical practice in mental health in the Primary Health Care (PHC) scenario. For this purpose, a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive approach was adopted, in which, through interviews with doctors working in the PHC of a municipality in the state of Alagoas/Brazil, data were produced, whose corpus was treated based on the application of thematic analysis of content. Medical practice in mental health in PHC persists in a biomedical model perspective, valuing the role of the psychiatrist as responsible for care, as well as the use of medication as the main therapeutic approach. As for the relationship with the family, its importance is recognized, although with the patient in mental suffering, it is difficult to attribute a leading role in their care process. Thus, it is necessary to rethink the paths of transformation of medical practice in mental health in PHC, whether by encouraging training proposals consistent with the reality of the practice of general practitioners, or by organizing and consolidating the Psychosocial Care network, so that the doctor can glimpse other possibilities of action and approaches consistent with the policies that govern mental health care in the country.
