Abstract

The aging of the world's population has had repercussions on the growth of care, support services and support for the elderly population. Collective residences are spreading as an alternative for housing these people. This article is based on the experience of a research with elderly people living in a Long Stay Institution for the Elderly People (LSIE), in the city of Recife/PE. We aim to contribute with the educating about aging, from a gerontological perspective, in the understanding of assisted living. In our goals, we are seeking to collaborate with the promotion of knowledge about biopsychosocial aging. Also, we want to understand how relationships occur in collective residences and to understand the relevant nuances of the elderly people heard by researchers. The stories of life that leading these people to collective residences are from numerous sorts and submitted to different crossings that lead elderly people to the collective residences and promotes the quality of the relationships they cultivate. We hope, with this text, to make institutionalized elderly people visible, to motivate the thinking about the creation of support networks for the elderly people and to promote strategies for the development of social and familiar relationships in the context of collective residence.
