Abstract

Introduction: Complete edentulism can cause functional, masticatory, esthetic and psychological problems and is a consequence of lack of care throughout life, a fact that is exacerbated by social inequality. Objective: To estimate the association between complete edentulism and sociodemographic characteristics, access to and use of dental services and multimorbidities among elderly people in the city of Gurupi, Tocantins. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study with a quantitative epidemiological survey approach. Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire applied in different sessions between October 2021 and August 2022. Results: The sample was predominantly female (55.66%), brown (60.38%), with up to four years of schooling (50.94%), with an income of up to minimum wage (61.7%) and with multimorbidity (48.58%). Complete edentulism (24.5%) was more common among respondents who were 70 years or older, had less than four years of education and whose last dental visit was more than one year ago. Being male and having had the last dental visit in a public clinic were protective factors for the occurrence of complete edentulism. Conclusions: The prevalence of edentulism is related to socioeconomic factors, demonstrating the great inequity that still exists in health care.
