Introduction: This study is based on the expansion of the Family Health Strategy in the Federal District, with Primary Health Care acting as a pillar of the universal public health system, which has enabled important advances and improvements in health care and in more concrete health promotion actions. In the Federal District, the process of expanding Primary Health Care was the result of the Plan to Convert the Traditional Model into the Family Health Strategy and emerged with the prospect of improving health and expanding access to Basic Health Units. Objective: To identify the changes and improvements associated with the expansion of the Family Health Strategy. Method: This is a qualitative-quantitative, analytical, and descriptive study, whose participants are health professionals and users of two Basic Health Units in different health regions. Results: The results show that the Family Health Strategy has gradually assumed its role as the main component of access to Primary Health Care. There is an urgent need to strengthen its foundations to achieve greater resoluteness and care, in a structured way. Conclusions: The care policy should be strengthened throughout the Family Health Strategy, particularly in relation to spontaneous requests and minor emergencies. This text is the result of the stricto sensu postgraduate program Professional Master's Degree in Family Health (PROFSAÚDE).
