Abstract

Introduction: Although the Ministry of Health has guidelines for palliative care within the SUS, there are still gaps in training on this topic, which directly impacts care practices. Objective: To understand the training path in palliative care of residents of a public hospital. Method: exploratory, descriptive, case study. For data collection, a focus group was conducted with residents in the second year of the Multiprofessional Residency in Adult and Elderly Health. The data were analyzed and categorized using the Malheiros method (1). Results: the data showed that training in palliative care is still incipient, and that this care is still very restricted to hospital-centered settings. Despite this, the experiences with non-formal/informal teaching were positive, contributing to greater appropriation of the theme by the residents. Final considerations: it is hoped that the results obtained can contribute to the reflection on the theme, minimize weaknesses in training and remedy possible gaps, as well as strengthen the principles that permeate palliation and care within the university hospital.
