The contribution of anthroposemiotics to the study of bodily symptoms

The central purpose of this article is to provide some theoretical notes that allow, from an anthropo-semiotic perspective, to contribute to studies of the body and health/disease processes in sociocultural contexts. We consider that suffering and its bodily materialization can be read from the confluence of different semiotic systems that determine the meaning, expression and experience of suffering. In this way, the reaction of the organism and its effects at the psychic and physical level, as coordinates of reflection, allow us to consider the methodological conditions necessary for the situational and contextual analysis of somatic symptoms. The text is structured on the basis of a reflection on the notion of symptom and, subsequently, on the semiotic processes involved in the interpretation of the body and disease. Part of this dissertation will draw on some empirical data drawn from our own research on the subject.
