Abstract

Based on a research developed in the Phoebe Hearst Anthropological Museum in 2020, some considerations are proposed in order to reflect about the history of anthropology in the USA and the transformations of museum perspectives in view of the native peoples of California. From the analyzes of the formation of some collections and texts on the museum's website, we seek to point out the changes that have taken place throughout its history. In this sense, we seek to use the work of Ira Stuart Jacknis (1952–2021), a researcher at the Phoebe Hearst Museum since 1991. The hypothesis outlined is that the contradictions and asymmetries inherent to anthropological work become potentially transformative, as the museum collections and archives contain reflexive dimensions and dynamic meanings, marked by the relationships established with different generations of the represented communities.
