Abstract

This text aims to demonstrate how the “new conservatism” developed in the United States, which emerged in the 1950s, from the perspective of its main chronicler, historian George H. Nash. His book The Conservative Intellectual Movement in America: Since 1945, published in 1976, specifies a set of ideas and intellectuals that had as a common bond the fight against communism. The space that brought together and strengthened this new intellectual field in America was the periodical created in 1955, National Review. The magazine served as a basis for the fight against what its authors called “leftism”, which responded to an appeal to totalitarianism, but it was also the basis for what the author attributed to be a “conservative intellectual movement”, which not only gained expression in the field of ideas, but mainly in the political field. His observations on this intellectual activism during the New Deal period interpreted the conservative field as an important tradition of American political thought.
