Abstract

This paper aims to perform a systematic review of the literature on the role of tumor necrosis factor in the development of psychiatric disorders. A systematic review of the literature was carried out in SciELO, PubMed, Science Direct and MEDLINE. The Health Science Descriptors used for the search were: (TNF) (dependence) ("psychiatric disease or psychiatric disorders"). A total of 11 articles made up the final sample for this study. The studies pointed out that psychiatric disorders are associated with high concentrations of tumor necrosis factor, being modulated from exposure to inflammatory substances, such as the consumption of alcohol and other drugs. Therefore, the literature showed that high levels of TNF-α have a significant correlation with mental disorders, being triggered by the production of exogenous factors, such as alcohol consumption.
