Abstract

The voluntary bone marrow donor registry is an important act that can save the lives of many people worldwide. It is a topic that is often overlooked but with a high demand from patients awaiting a transplant. Therefore, the need for an action aimed at raising awareness about the issue and, at the same time, recruiting new voluntary donors was observed. This is a descriptive study, in the form of an experiential report, carried out on May 17th at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (ICF), located at the Federal University of Alagoas (UFAL), in conjunction with activities developed by the Academic League of Pediatric Oncology (LAOnP) and with the participation of students from the Clinical Hematology discipline of the Pharmacy course at ICF/UFAL and from HEMOAL. The action aimed to highlight the importance of bone marrow transplantation and how outreach activities can contribute to health promotion in society and how beneficial they can be for the academic growth of university students. The results of the experiences were segmented into five topics: knowledge obtained in the lecture; number of registrations obtained; academic development and applicability in the job market; and the importance of participation in university extension projects. Thus, the importance of these projects is evident, both in terms of the broad academic experience that students can acquire and the impact that can be made on a variety of causes.
