Abstract

Angola is one of the main African states and one of the great leaders in Southern Africa. With a history of conflict for independence and civil war, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola has been in power since independence. Recently, in 2017, President José Eduardo dos Santos, in power for 38 years, gave way to João Lourenço. The objective of this research is to analyze, from the historical-comparative method, if this change had a positive impact on the Angolan democratization process. It is assumed that there were no significant changes in the country's political conduct. Preliminary conclusions point to the maintenance of the power elite and an eventual authoritarian retreat.
