Abstract

Introduction: Violence, despite not being a health issue directly, has an intense impact on subjects and the Health System. By taking a gender-oriented perspective, a serious complex public health problem is evidenced, for which Brazil occupies the fifth position in the world in number of feminicides per year. Method: This is an ecological, cross-sectional, descriptive study, using records from the state of Bahia of women of childbearing age, victims of physical violence, surveyed in the Notifiable Diseases Information System - SINAN, from 2016 to 2021. Results: There were 12,404 records of physical violence in the 15 to 49 age group. Most occurred in the East Macroregion of Bahia, where the capital is located; regarding the degree of kinship, the majority were abused by their spouses, which demonstrates the role of patriarchy in gender violence. Black and brown women were the most affected, which exposes Brazil’s structural racism. Final considerations: However, public policies on gender violence should not be restricted to registration only, it is necessary to use these data to promote more effective social protection policies, since racism and patriarchy are of fundamental importance in the construction of gender violence.
