ABSTRACT
Introduction: The promotion of healthy eating in schools plays a fundamental role in children's health, contributing to positive dietary habits. Objective: This study aims to characterize health promotion and healthy eating strategies in public and private schools in the city of Barreiras (BA). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 30 schools in the same municipality (17 public and 13 private). By administering a questionnaire to one administrator from each educational institution, it was possible to estimate the degree of implementation of the evaluated components, including community participation, healthy environments, nutrition policies, nutritional status monitoring, and collaboration with the healthcare sector. The sum of the variables within these components classified the schools into three levels of implementation: satisfactory, unsatisfactory, and critical. Results: Only 10% (n=3) of the schools achieved a satisfactory level of health promotion and healthy eating implementation. Overall, private institutions received better ratings than the public education system, with a higher percentage of implementation in the components of community involvement, nutritional status monitoring, and nutrition policies. Conclusion: The results of this pioneering study indicate that a limited number of schools are engaged in promoting healthy eating.
