Introduction: Breastfeeding is an ancient practice with many benefits for both mother and child. For the child, the benefits are fully reaped when breastfeeding is continued for at least two years and exclusive feeding is offered until six months of age. Objective: To identify risk and protective factors associated with the duration of breastfeeding in children up to two years of age in the municipality of Corbélia, state of Paraná. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 130 mothers who attended family health centers located in Corbélia. The Kaplan-Meier estimator and the Cox model were used for the analysis. Results: The factors associated with the duration of breastfeeding were: Family income, maternal age, guidance on introduction of complementary foods, gestational age at birth, and exclusive receipt of breast milk in the first six hours of life. Conclusions: To ensure continuity and prolongation of breastfeeding duration, this study has led to the understanding that it is necessary to combine different intervention strategies and actions, especially concerning the continuous health education of the professionals who accompany these women throughout the pregnancy and postpartum cycle.
