Abstract

Introduction: Research plays a fundamental role in medical education, challenging students to explore not only scientific knowledge but also the ethical and social aspects of medicine. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a global issue, and the care of hemodialysis patients faces challenges in Brazil. Objective: To report the students' experience during participation in a research project.

Methods: This is an experiential report of medical students from the Federal University of Paraíba involved in CKD-related research. The students collected data at hemodialysis clinics in João Pessoa, Paraíba, from September 2019 to October 2023 through interviews with an exchange of experiences between students and interviewees. Results: Students learned about the social complexity of CKD and the need for patient-centered care. They identified weaknesses in the care of dialysis patients, which primarily focuses on renal issues. This sensitized them to create extension projects to address these care gaps. Conclusions: Research enriched the students' education, underscoring the fundamental role of research in medical education and the preparation of ethical healthcare professionals.
