INSECTICIDAL ACTIVITY OF PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL ON CATERPILLARS OF Spodoptera frugiperda SMITH (1797) (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE)

Abstract

Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), commonly known as the fall armyworm, exhibits a polyphagous feeding habit, consuming more than 80 plant species, with a marked preference for grasses and causing significant damage to Zea mays L.This study aimed to evaluate an alternative control method for fall armyworm infestations by using peppermint essential oil at various concentrations (0.25%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 4.0% essential oil per liter of water). Corn leaves were treated with these solutions and then exposed to 3rd instar larvae (staged based on head capsule size). After 24 hours of exposure in sealed Petri dishes, the lethality of peppermint essential oil on Spodoptera frugiperda was assessed. As concentrations increase, the mortality rate of the caterpillars also rises, confirming the toxicity of peppermint on Spodoptera, with a lethality rate of 86% observed at the highest concentration of 4.0%.
