Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized insect behavioral analysis, providing greater precision and efficiency in bioassays. This study employed the ToxTrac software to monitor the behavior of the South American palm weevil, Rhynchophorus palmarum, in response to the commercial pheromone Rincoforol. A Y-tube olfactometer was used to evaluate insect responses, with movements tracked by ToxTrac, which generated detailed metrics such as average speed, total distance traveled, and time spent in each olfactometer zone. Results showed that 80% of individuals chose the arm containing Rincoforol, confirming its attractiveness. Additionally, advanced analyses revealed more complex behavioral patterns, such as delayed decision-making and variations in zone exploration times. These insights, difficult to obtain through traditional methods, highlight the importance of integrating AI tools into bioassays to enhance understanding of insect behavior and optimize integrated pest management strategies.
