V Bienal do Sertão: Art and Off-Axis Curating

This article analyzes the curatorial narrative of the IV Bienal do Sertão de Artes Visuais, held in 2019, and investigates from the perspective of “invention of the (brazilian) Northeast” how this “out of hegemonic axis” artistic event relates to themes such as the history of exhibitions, memory/power and identity and how the brazilian Northeast and Sertão categories are mobilized by the curatorial discourse and artistic poetics. When considering exhibitions as political devices, the article questions what is/are the image/s of the Northeast/Sertão propagated within spaces of Contemporary Art, specifically in the IV Bienal do Sertão de Artes Visuais and how the poetics of some of the artists in this edition of the Bienal dialogue with these issues.
