The informational competence of reference librarians in Brazilian universities

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the informational competence of reference service librarians who work in Brazilian university libraries. It is characterized as an exploratory and descriptive study, with a quantitative approach. Using the questionnaire instrument to collect data with 40 librarians from 40 university libraries in Brazil. The questions were based on the American Library Association (ALA) guidelines on information literacy and on the scientific literature. The questions were carried out in closed multiple-choice questions or using the Likert scale, addressing the ability of the reference librarian, his/her behavior towards information sources, skills in service communication, users' main difficulties, user training, digital communication interfaces and evaluation of these services. The study reveals a librarian who is concerned with developing skills/skills throughout life, concerned with learning technically and developing skills to understand the library user's behaviour, focusing on their difficulties to find the information they want, on the trainings to make them autonomous, on the communicational interfaces and on the evaluation of the services offered by the libraries investigated.
