Abstract

Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is a pleiotropic cytokine whose main function is to control immune responses. The -819 C>T (rs1800871) polymorphism in the IL-10 gene has been associated with the development of psychiatric comorbidities. The aim of this work was to review the role of IL-10 and its SNP rs1800871 in the development of psychiatric illnesses. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a complete reading was performed, totaling 36 articles included. Thus, it was possible to observe the predominance of higher levels of IL-10 associated with several psychiatric diseases. As for the polymorphism in the IL-10 gene, a Brazilian study showed an association between a higher risk of suicide and worse environmental and social quality of life, leading to a higher risk of suicide. In addition, other studies have shown the association of the C/C genotype and A allele with schizophrenia and of the C allele with aggressiveness, as well as the C/T genotype with a protective effect against schizophrenia. However, it is observed that there are few studies carried out and little information about it, being necessary to carry out more research in this area.
