Abstract

Nitrogen fertilization is an essential factor for plant development, especially in plants whose commercial product is leaves, such as lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The objective of this work is to evaluate the production of curly lettuce with different sources of nitrogen. Plants of the cultivar Vera (curly group) were used. The experiment was carried out in the field in Pinhalzinho/SC, in the summer of 2022/23 and was conducted in a randomized block design (DBC). The treatments were: control: cultivation without nitrogen fertilization; organic fertilizer (poultry compost); chemical fertilizer (urea source) and calcium nitrate. The evaluated characteristics were: number of leaves, fresh mass, and productivity. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and comparison of means by Tukey's test (p<0.05). The best results for the production of lettuce, cultivar Vera, under the conditions of this research, in general, were found with the application of organic fertilizer. The organic nitrogen source, derived from poultry compost, provided the best performance for number of leaves per plant, fresh mass and total productivity, proving to be an interesting alternative for fertilizer in lettuce cultivation.
