Bird watching tourism as a contribution to sustainability– the case of the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve in Ecuador
Keywords:
Bird Watching, community engagement, alternative tourism.Abstract
Taking as a starting point the biodiversity of birds in the Ecuadorian Amazon, specifically in the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve (YBR), the aim was to evaluate the perception of people with local preferences or linked to this place about the activity of bird watching as a tourism alternative, diagnosing contributions and limitations for the development of a tourism offer based on the local identity of the indigenous communities. For this, a questionnaire was used to analyze people's perception of the YBR and an interview with an expert to learn about the criteria used to establish birdwatching tourism sites, the differentiating variables for the tourist experience in the YBR and the contribution to sustainable development of local communities.
