Abstract

The study presents the formal and informal sources of information used in the Brazilian scenario during the COVID-19 pandemic and explains people's perceptions regarding the relevance and trust in these sources. Data were obtained through semi-structured interviews, to describe the sources of information about COVID-19 considered relevant and confidential to assist study participants in making decisions during this pandemic. The guiding concepts of Savolainen's model (1995) - Everyday Life Information Seeking (ELIS) were considered when conducting the interviews, as well as the concepts of information sources by Choo (2006) and the Latin American and Caribbean Information Center in Health Sciences (BIREME, 2005). The results show that both formal and informal sources of information were used to assist in health decision-making. It was found that digital media and traditional media were primarily used as sources of information about COVID-19. Institutional sources, scientific sources, as well as experts from the areas of Health Sciences, Biological Sciences, and related areas, as well as personal sources of information, were also used. The data also reveals that the relevance and trust attributed to these sources were determined by the recognition of the authority of the information sources.
