Abstract

Herpes simplex is a highly contagious viral disease common in childhood. The research aimed to compare the number of cases of Herpes simplex virus infections before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, considering factors that can prevent its spread. Data regarding hospital morbidity in the SUS were collected in two periods: 2015 to 2019 and 2020 to 2022. Prevalence coefficients and detection of Herpes simplex infection were used, with emphasis on the age group of children from 1 to 4 years old. The results showed a significant reduction in the number of Herpes simplex infections in children during the COVID-19 pandemic, while there was a slight increase in some areas in people aged 14 and over. This condition may be related to the limitations imposed by the pandemic, such as limited access to health facilities, as well as the increased use of hygiene measures, such as masks, alcohol gel and physical distancing.
