The cohesive relations in Marina Colasanti's chronicle, "I know, but I shouldn't":

an analysis of the meanings effects from the perspective of Textual Linguistics

Abstract

Based on authors representing Textual Linguistics, such as Antunes (2005, 2010), Faraco and Vieira (2019), Pauliukonis and Cavalcante (2018), Garantizado Jr. and Cavalcante (2016) and Cavalcante et al. (2019) the present work intends to describe the cohesive resources and procedures present in Marina Colasanti's chronicle, “I know, but I shouldn't”, in addition to analyzing the effects of meanings produced in the text. For this purpose, as a theoretical contribution, the concept of text and the properties of textuality are presented, with special emphasis on the relations, resources and procedures of cohesion. In the analysis stage of the chronicle, relations of reiteration, association and connection are identified, and the resources of each one of them, such as paraphrase, parallelism, repetition, grammatical, lexical or ellipsis substitutions, the resource of lexical selection and the connectors. The results show the presence of relations of reiteration, connection and semantic association, with mastery of the resources of literal repetition, parallelism and ellipse, which may suggest that the author has intended the effect of circularity in everyday habits, of trivializing life. It is possible to apprehend the progression of ideas through the incorporation of different semantic fields, while the resources of literal repetition and parallelism guarantee thematic continuity. An attempt was made here to make evident the complexity of the cohesive resources in the text, but also to highlight the possibility of studying the text beyond grammatical categorizations, thinking about its meaning effects, aesthetic and rhetorical.
