The disruptive movement of Open Science present in the cinematographic work "The Oil of Lorenzo

Abstract

This study aims to demonstrate the framework of Open Science in the 1992 movie The Oil of Lorenzo, adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). In addition, the film portrays the environment of scientific research. The exciting film presents a real learning experience for those who watch it. With emotional overload, the story rescues values such as persistence, resilience, determination, dedication and love for others. In the scientific context, it addresses ethical issues, lack of interest in government, researchers and support foundations, but also the pioneering spirit of researchers at the beginning of their careers and of some already on the way to retirement. This study can be characterized as bibliographic, documental and descriptive, supported by a film analysis with a focus on Open Science, present in this work, as a possibility to develop more efficient investigation, with the cooperation of research laboratories from different countries, free access to research results in scientific articles and communications at events. Finally, it mentions the need for investments in research and highlights the real importance of science for society. The analysis was carried out in two moments, in the decomposition of the film and four units of analysis. Regarding Open Science, at various times, disruptive ballasts can be identified that align the script to events related to the debates or practices of this movement.
