In this article, we propose a discussion on children's and youth literature in translation. Therefore, we begin our reflections with a look at Sonia Rosa’s writing and her concept “affective black literature for children and young people”, focusing on Quando a escrava Esperança Garcia escreveu uma carta (2012). Based on a true story, the book has Rosa as its author and Luciana Justiniani Hess as its illustrator. Subsequently, considering theorists such as Lambert and Van Gorp (1985), Gideon Toury (1995) and Yuste Frías (2014), we carried out a descriptive study on the translation of this work into English – When the Slave Esperança Garcia Wrote a Letter (2015) – produced by Jane Springer and published by Groundwood Books/House of Anansi Press in Canada and the United States. Through this analysis, we verified how much the translated book contributes to the projection of a critical look at Brazilian slavery in the reception system, based on Esperança Garcia's protagonism.
