Abstract

In the present work, we carry out a description of the concepts referring to the gothic genre and the detective genre, with which we seek to support the analysis of the short story “The speckled band”, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, published in 1892, the so-called Golden Age of detective productions. Thus, the objective of this research is to demonstrate and highlight how the atmosphere provoked by the Gothic elements causes an estrangement effect in Doyle's detective narrative, emphasizing the use of the intellect, characteristic of detective works, at the same time that it imprints an air of uncertainty to the tale. To achieve the objectives of this analysis, we based ourselves, as the main theoretical reference, on Bloch (1998), Rossi (2008), Sá (2019), Vinícius (2013) and Murano (2011). Based on our arguments, it is possible to conclude that the short story “The speckled band” makes use of elements from Gothic literature in an expressive way, influencing, in a way, the reading perspective, due to the structural and thematic alignment of the detective and Gothic genres.
