Casar é uma vez só! Uma análise do parâmetro movimento em verbos inerentemente recíprocos da Língua Brasileira de Sinais

Natural languages use different strategies to mark reciprocity in their grammar. In this paper, we analyze a group of verbs in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) whose reciprocal reading is already present in their lexical specification. After identifying these verbs, called lexical reciprocals or inherently reciprocal verbs, we provided a phonological description of these items and identified two common properties among them: they are all bimanual and they have a very characteristic movement pattern. Regarding bimanuality, we argue that there is a semantic (iconic, actually) mapping between each of the hands and a participant in the event. Regarding the patterns of movement, the main focus of this article, we note two main types of movement: i) simple (or repetitive) movement and ii) alternating movement. The difference between these two types of movement reflects an important semantic distinction: inherently reciprocal verbs with single movement encode symmetric atomic events, while those with alternating movement encode asymmetric events, where reciprocity is obtained from the accumulation of non-symmetric subevents. This observation contributes to discussions on the phonology-semantic interface and to a better semantic description of reciprocal verbs in Libras, aligning with findings in other sign languages.
