Abstract

Abuse in alcohol consumption is associated with the development and complications of several psychiatric diseases. It is observed that some studies seek to understand the role of the immune system in neurological changes. Interferon gamma (IFN-γ), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, has immunomodulatory activity. The objective of this work is to carry out a systematic review of the literature on the role of IFN-γ in the development of psychiatric illnesses in alcohol users. For review, the following databases were used: Pubmed, ScienceDirect and BVS, with the keywords, “Interferon gamma”, “Psychiatric disease”, “Psychiatric disorders”, and “Alcohol” modulated by the AND operator, after applying the criteria of inclusion and exclusion. Psychiatric disorders such as: schizophrenia, bipolar mania and panic disorder were associated with low levels of IFN-γ, depression was associated with elevated levels, stable secretion levels were found in schizophrenic patients, studies involving IFN-γ and psychiatric illnesses in alcohol users were not found, which is a promising field for the development of research.
