The objective of this article is to discuss the meaning of the work School and Democracy, written by Professor Dermeval Saviani, published in 1983. We address the historical, political and philosophical foundations of Historical-Critical Pedagogy and its importance for education and society Brazilian, considering that it is a founding work of this pedagogical theory, which opposes hegemonic pedagogies and is committed to the working class, to social transformation and human emancipation. Its relevance stands out even more in the current context in which we find ourselves, in which the development of capital threatens practically all civilizational and human achievements, which urgently requires changes in both education and society.
